These star testing essays and whatnot we read have gotten me thinking. What is the true goal of this American lifestyle we are leading? I’ve given this some sporadic thought for the past few years, but never really decided to lay out what it is. I’ll start out by saying that the entire focus of this nation is centered on buying. Buy buy buy. Sell sell sell. Consumerism. And that’s all i see! There is no underlying focus, no hidden value to life that we’re all really pursuing. We’re just trying to claw our way to the top of this consumeristic ladder. How do we measure success? By how much you can buy. How do you become a successful individual or corporation? Convince the ever susceptible public that they need to buy your product or service. And that’s the system. That’s all there is to it. Odds are you’re going to sell, or you’re going to work for someone who sells. And you have to buy.
Everything we do is based on buying. Food. Music. Hygiene. Communication. Entertainment. Transportation. Unless the power goes out, there’s never an instant where you’re not paying for something. Have you ever thought about that? But this detracts a bit from my main point of contemplation: what is the true meaning of life? Not American life, but a good life in general. What is it we SHOULD be striving for? Our minds have been twisted and brainwashed into this idea of consumerism, so much that I believe no one in this country has a sense of how life should be lived anymore. Yes, even I have fallen victim to this conformity. I dream of living a life where I have 20+ cars, every top of the line gadget and musical instrument, and the ability to buy anything on a whim. Is that so wrong? No, I have a right to dream of being wealthy and successful. But yes, it is wrong. Very wrong. Success in life should not be defined by money. NOTHING in life should revolve around money. Money is power. Power corrupts. It creates undue stress. It turns people into shallow, lifeless shoppers. But its all we know. This is America. The land of corporations. It’s by design. We’re supposed to be sucked into this black hole of seeing the world in terms of money.
So then, where has the meaning of life gone? I dream of finding that someday. I want to know what it is we should be living for. What we could be living for. I believe that everyone in this country needs to take a step back from everyday life, and realize how monotonous and unnecessary many of things we take part in are. I believe that life should be stress-free, full of enjoyment, learning, friendship, family, love, kindness, and peace. I pray that one day money won’t matter. That we will just be able to live our life however way we choose, with no one telling us right or wrong. To me, life should be all about what makes you happy. Our current lifestyle has become so hectic, stressful, and fast paced, we’ve lost touch with what truly makes us happy. On top of this, social acceptance, influenced by material goods, has further distorted our sense of pleasure. We’ve become so concerned with fitting in, that our happiness revolves around acting certain ways and buying objects which make us feel a part of something.
And who’s to blame? Is it human nature? Or should we stick it to those giant corporations shoving advertisements down our throats incessantly? It’s hard to say. I will credit America for maintaining the primary goal of man: survival. But i don’t want to just survive.
I want to live.
